IABC/Tucson Chapter Newsletter – September 2006
In This Issue:
1. October Meeting – “Networking at the Speed of Light”
On Thursday, October 5, you’ll have the opportunity to make new friends, solve your communications problems and energize your professional life – just by attending IABC/Tucson’s popular networking lunch! You’ll find networking to be stress-free and lively as you progress through three sessions, each lasting 20 to 25 minutes. When you RSVP, indicate a topic or issue you’d like to have discussed. Then bring plenty of business cards, a pen and a notepad to take notes about the great ideas and contacts shared during our speed networking event.
The meeting will be held between 11:30 am and 1:15 pm at McMahon's Steak House, 2959 N. Swan Road (SW corner with Ft. Lowell). The cost is $18 for members, $25 for guests and members without reservations and $14 for student members. No-shows will be billed.
To RSVP, contact Juleen Eichinger at eichinger@hotmail.com or 520-731-2784 by Tuesday, October 3.
2. IABC/Tucson Seeks a New Logo!
After a quarter-century of service to local business communicators, our Tucson chapter deserves a new look. Who better knows what that look ought to be than our own members?
Enter the contest to design a new chapter logo and you might win a free membership or lots of free admissions into IABC/Tucson activities. The winning entry will appear on all of the chapter’s materials and will become the recognized symbol of opportunity for Southern Arizona business communicators.
The deadline for entries has been changed to October 15, 2006, so get those creative juices flowing and send in your ideas. All of the information you need to enter, including contest rules, criteria, terms and the entry form, are available at http://www.iabctucson.com/logocontest_home.htm. For more information, contact Elena Acoba, 742-1979, acoba@dakotacom.net.
3. October is Accreditation Month
Ever thought of becoming an accredited business communicator? It’s a great way to test your skills, validate that you have what it takes to be a leader in your field and prove your worth to your employer or clients. As an incentive, all IABC members who submit their accreditation application and fee in October will receive a US$20 gift certificate to the IABC Knowledge Centre. In addition, their names will automatically be entered in a prize drawing for the chance to win:

4. Gearing Up for the Big 25
To most of us, 25 doesn’t seem very old. However, it’s a major milestone for a professional organization. In 2007, IABC/Tucson will celebrate its 25th anniversary. The winning IABC logo contest entry will make its debut at the chapter’s February 1 celebration. A committee is busy pulling together activities, gifts and public awareness ideas to mark our silver anniversary in style. Details will be forthcoming as plans for a year-long celebration are finalized.
5. Kudos to Our Volunteers
Like every professional organization, we rely upon volunteers to serve on our board, a committee, or to complete a special assignment. These all too often unsung heroes/heroines are vital to the success of our chapter. A deep bow is due to the committee involved with planning the chapter’s 25th anniversary: Stephen Reidy, Monica Sufaro Spigelman, Libby Howell, Mark Flint and Susan Guerrero. We’d also like to thank Karen Dahood for accepting payments at our September 7 chapter meeting. And, last but not least, we appreciate the team at Raim who is helping to redesign our chapter website.
6. Pssst . . .We Need a Librarian
The chapter’s library needs new contributions of professional literature and work samples, as well as a volunteer who can clean out our inventory of materials, accept loan requests and keep our collection in good order. If you can contribute materials or want to serve as our chapter librarian, please contact Elena Acoba, 742-1979, acoba@dakotacom.net.
7. A Look Ahead
At our chapter meeting on November 2, Dan Benavidez and Peter Bramley of Ridgewood & Associates will speak on issues related to government/non-profit communications. A complete description of the presentation will be provided in the next issue of Byword.
On December 6, IABC and PRSA will host a joint mixer. Arizona Daily Star cartoonist David Fitzsimmons will take a look at the business communications and public relations faux pas and follies of 2006. The evening gathering, to be held at the historic Fox Theatre, will also feature a short film about the restoration of the venue.
