Informative Seminar Replaces May Chapter Meeting
There will be no luncheon meeting in May. Instead, you are invited to attend an interactive Web teleconference:

Who Are Those People and What Do They Want?
Influencing Employee Attitudes, Rethinking Employee Communications, Challenging Current Assumptions

Understanding the employee mentality and receptiveness to information is essential to designing effective communication and feedback programs. This IABC Web teleconference offers a first look at employee communication from the employee’s perspective. Presented by James E. Lukaszewski, ABC, APR, Fellow PRSA, CCEP, this virtual seminar offers insights into dealing with and overcoming the employee emotions that resist communication-driven remedies.

Learn how to refocus, rethink and develop strategies to improve both the quality and effectiveness of your employee communications and its strategic value to management. Additional details about the seminar at www.iabc.com/education/webseminars.htm. Our special thanks to member Ginny Geib and the UA College of Pharmacy for providing the room for this presentation.

  • When: Wednesday, May 30, 2007, 8:45-10:30 a.m.
  • Where: University of Arizona Roy P. Drachman Hall, 1295 N. Martin Ave., Room A326 (on the glass bridge)
  • Cost: $10 for members with reservations and for students, $15 for non-members and at the door

Cactus Quill Awards Event Set for June
We hope that you have already noted the Cactus Quill Award Ceremony on Thursday, June 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on your calendar. Now please commit to attending this event. It will be a great professional development opportunity as well as a fun evening. You can examine each award-winning entry and talk to the creator in-depth about its planning and execution. We'll also have award-winning entries from Texas and Ohio for your examination. Get tips and advice on your own upcoming projects with fellow business communicators. It's all set in the beautiful, historic Temple of Music and Art, where we’ll tempt you with delicious food by Gallery of Food and the local art on display at nearby Etherton Gallery. Watch your e-mail or visit www.tucson.com in a few weeks for information on RSVPs.

Hats Off to Our Volunteers
IABC chapters help each other out by exchanging judges for local Quill awards. Our chapter helped out Brazos Valley, Texas, and Columbus, Ohio, while those chapters are looking over our Cactus Quill entries. Thanks to the following folks who judged almost 40 entries in the past month: Elena Acoba, Karen Dahood, Marie Demarais, Joe Dolan, Geneva Escobedo, Mark Flint, Rick Gary, Susan Guerrero, Linda Herrick, Kathy Hippensteel, Dave Irwin, Nancy McCluskey-Moore, Michelle Rau, Lynne Wakefield, and Karen Wood. And an especially big thank you is due Martha Retallick, who coordinated all the incoming and outgoing judging.

Additional thanks are due to Martha and Geneva, as well as Juleen Eichinger, Linda Kern, and Julie Ray for their work on the Cactus Quill Awards, including planning the awards ceremony. We especially want to thank Kathy Hippensteel and Hughes Federal Credit Union for sponsoring this event. We could use plenty of other volunteers to help set up the reception and we would welcome another sponsor for this special event. Contact Elena Acoba, 742-1979 or acoba@dakotacom.net if you'd like to participate in any way.

Web Unveiling on the Horizon
Paul Tumarkin, our chapter's technology director, is working hard on our new IABC/Tucson Website. Watch for an announcement through e-mail; you could win a free IABC teleseminar or a free chapter lunch.
