IABC Tucson Chapter News April 2, 2010
In This Issue:
Meet Up at Tucson Festival of Books
You’ll find IABC/Tucson members all over the Tucson Festival of Books March 13 and 14. Biz-comm central will be booth 172, where the chapter will spread the word about our industry and hold daily drawings for books. Stop by to enter the drawings, which include business books by member Marilyn Pincus and a tome from IABC’s The Knowledge Center.
Take a lunch break with other members during daily meet-ups 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the food court. Come by the booth and the workers will guide you to the right place.
You can also hang out with members while staffing the booth. It’s a nice way to get to know your colleagues. There is one open slot on Saturday afternoon and three empty seats throughout Sunday. To volunteer, contact Nancy McCluskey-Moore, ABC, nmcmoore@yahoo.com.
And visit these members at the festival:
Janni Lee Simner, who’s written several young-adult books and short stories, will spend Sunday signing books, reading to teens and participating in a 1 p.m. panel, “Culture and Mythology in Fantasy.”
Daphne Gilman will help run the Ventana/Roche Science Pavilion presented by BIO5, where she is director of strategic alliances.
Pima Community College will market their offerings and activities at a booth.
We are still accepting book donations for the daily drawings. To make one, contact Karen Lutrick, klutrick@gmail.com.
April Panel on Online Marketing
Paid and volunteer experts handle the marketing for Tucson Festival of Books, which includes a comprehensive online messaging plan to support aggressive fundraising, sponsorship and attendance goals.
Come hear from the team's powerhouse members from Caliber Group, Tucson Newspapers, Starnet, the Reading Seed and BIO5 on what worked and what didn’t. Get ideas for your own online marketing plan as well as tips for successfully integrating volunteers into your next event.

Finish Your Cactus Quill Entry
With the March 19 early deadline fast approaching, it’s time to polish your entry for the 2010 Cactus Quill Awards, sponsored by Bohte Design LLC. Submitting by March 19 saves you $10 for the first entry, $15 for additional entries. Entries must be received by that date to qualify for the discount.
Quill judges and winners are ready to help you with those final touches. To get a hold of an advisor, contact Elena Acoba, acoba@dakotacom.net.
Learn About Twitter
Twitter newbies who missed Barb Gibson’s web seminar last month can have a second chance to learn how to use the social network. The recorded version of the seminar will be available for a limited time and IABC/Tucson is willing to present it if there’s enough interest. To express your interest and find out the details, contact Paul Tumarkin, pkt@barkingshelby.com.
IABC/Brazos Valley Bravo Judges Wanted
IABC/Tucson has agreed to judge IABC/Brazos Valley’s Bravo Awards, its version of the Cactus Quills, in exchange for judging our chapter’s award entries. Judging will occur this month. If you’d like to volunteer and learn what Texas business communicators are doing, contact Elena Acoba, acoba@dakotacom.net.
