Prez Tumarkin Remarkin’ for Last Time
Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for having me at the helm of our chapter this year. After five years (has it been five years?) as an IABCer, this has been the most challenging and rewarding year yet.
When I first became a member, our website had the classic grey background. Our newsletter was in PDF format. Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook were not even on the conceptual radar. “Social media” had yet to have its name.
Look at us today. IABC/Tucson members participate in an active, ongoing conversation via social media. We’re communicating faster and more frequently than ever before. As communications professionals, not only do we have the opportunity to lead the way in creating new and effective ways to leverage these technologies, we can bring it all together to create meaningful stories for our audiences.
IABC is a place to expand these professional experiences and expertise. Our organization offers a fantastic chance for each of us to become better connected to the ever-changing landscape of professional communications. In short, IABC is a place to grow.
In recent work I did for a client, I had the opportunity read about Carol Dweck of Stanford University, who wrote Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. She found that there are two mindsets with which we humans approach life.
Those with a fixed mindset see their talents and abilities as fixed and static. These people protect themselves from failure by not trying new experiences and challenging themselves.
Those with a growth mindset see themselves as fluid and changing. They see challenge as an opportunity to learn and grow.
I bring this up because I want you to have a clear understanding of both a wish and a challenge I have for you for the coming year:
First, I wish for you the vision to keep a growth mindset in all your endeavors, personal and professional. Do that, and success will come your way
And the challenge? Flip on that growth mindset and get involved in helping to put on one--just one--IABC event. You will meet great people, have a wonderful experience and, yes, grow.
So, thanks to all of the volunteers who helped us throughout the year. Thanks to my teammates who made up our board: Daphne Gilman, Juleen Eichinger, Monica Surfaro-Spigelman, Karen Lutrick and Elena Acoba. You have all been unflinchingly supportive, you’ve brought gusto and gumption to the table, and you set a wonderfully high bar.
And to every IABC/Tucson member, I look forward to seeing every one of you at an event in the coming year! Cheers and I’m sure we’ll talk soon,
*Paul
