Retirement Planning Re-cap

Reaching your retirement goal is a lifelong endeavour, certified retirement planner Jim Hall reminded attendees of the Feb. 3, 2010 seminar on the subject.

Hall, who presented the seminar on behalf of host IABC/Tucson and Hughes Federal Credit Union, showed how planning starts and how to get to the end with enough funds to make retirement financially fulfilling.

Here are some take-aways by some of the attendees:

Paul Tumarkin, owner of Barking Shelby Communications

“It might sound basic, but the whole metaphor for creating a map to follow--and then sticking to it--was extremely helpful. Often, we think about creating the plan, but we forget about all the stops along the way. We all came away with a little more insight into the future, as well as a little extra push to get ourselves on the right path.”

Kathy Hippensteel, marketing manager at Hughes Federal Credit Union

“I particularly enjoyed learning that in the working years, ideally, you have disability insurance and life insurance; in retirement years you need to have health insurance and long-term insurance. You really would no longer need life insurance because life insurance is primarily needed for your dependents.”

Juleen Eichinger, owner of Eichinger Communications LLC

“I was struck by several aspects of the presentation:

  • The booklet is very handy and provides hands-on tools to check one's progress against averages and to plan one's retirement savings needs.
  • While HFCU obviously gets some benefit from have a certified financial planner (CFP) on its payroll, it was very comforting to learn that as a credit union member I can consult with the CFP at no cost and without the worry that I am being steered toward products that might benefit the CFP rather than me.
  • I was reminded of how much our retirement security is in our own hands and how essential it is to have financial discipline throughout our lives.”

Monica Surfaro-Spigelman, writer, SEO marketing & PR, web content management

“I felt the meeting offered a valuable opportunity to sit and reflect on a topic (retirement) not always front of mind, particularly in this economy.”

Monica found these helpful links from the Hughes website:

  • Calculator Selection Menu This page includes useful calculators applying to retirement planning.
  • Financial Services Jim Hall provides a variety of resources on investments and retirement planning. He can email material if you complete the form appearing on this page.
