2008

On June 5 at the Temple of Music and Art, we honored this year's Cactus Quill Award winners. Congratulations to all the winners!

April 3-5, we hosted the Pacific Region Chapter/Leadership Development Meeting. A bout 35 regional and chapter board members from the IABC Pacific Plains region, representing 14 states in the Midwest, Plains and Four Corners regions, as well as the West Coast and Hawaii, came to join us here in Tucson and talk turkey about IABC chapter strategies for success. A great time was had by all, and everyone came away with wonderful new ideas and contacts. And the food at Casa Vicente was a HUGE hit.

On March 6, we received insights on communications planning from the perspective of Kimbal Hansen, ABC and Communications Manager for the Freeport-MacMoran Mining Company. Kimbal told us about communications strategies behind the opening of a copper mine in eastern Arizona. With the controversies as well as community benefits offered by mining operations, our discussion was informative, interesting and lively.

On February 7, 2008, Lisa Reed updated us on Border Patrol activities and technologies. We also discussed the unique dimensions of her assignment and the differences between "publicity" and "community relations" in light of the Border Patrol's growing presence in our region. What a great discussion!

On December 11, 2007, IABC and PRSA celebrated the season with laughter and giving. The Tucson community of communications professionals gathered at the Arizona Inn to celebrate the season. In addition to great food and company, the Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed Improv Comedy Troupe was our entertainment, providing interactive improv comedy and poking gentle fun at public relations, marketing and communications professionals. At the event, we also collected contributions for Tucson's Experience Corps.

November 1, we discussed 7 Steps in Integrated Communications. Great ideas about effective communications planning surfaced during our November chapter meeting. Chapter Vice President Linda Herrick led the session by presenting a 7-step integrated communication planning process which was modified from a workshop originally presented by Patricia Whalen, Ph.D., APR., at the IABC Business Writing Conference in Chicago.

October 4, 2007: We learned the ABCs of Accreditation.
OK, what does it really mean to earn the status of "ABC" -
Accredited Business Communicator? IABC's accreditation program is designed to recognize professionalism and to be an important step in career development. Attendees learned about the testing and portfolio evaluation processes involved in IABC Accreditation.

September 6, 2007: We "Jump Started" our creative thinking with Paul Tumarkin, Owner of Barking Shelby Communications and IABC/Tucson Technology Director
We got to experience something out of the ordinary and have some fun! With help from Paul, we learned and practiced using five specific, easy-to-use yet effective techniques for developing innovative solutions for all types business challenges.

August 2, 2007, we experienced "A Day in the Life of…" two local Journalists. We had lunch with two media insiders--Tim Steller, Business Editor of the Arizona Daily Star, and Christopher Francis, Producer of the KOLD News. They discussed how reporters and producers are using old and new technology to get their information and generate copy. We learned what communications grab their attention most, and some great insights on promoting stories.

We mixed it up with Tucson's marketing and communications pros at The Westin La Paloma.

June 7, 2007: Learn From the Best: Meet the Cactus Quill Award Winners. IABC/Tucson’s sixth annual Cactus Quill Awards Presentation was a great opportunity to collect tips from award-winning business communicators.

April 5: "Get Real" on with advice from veteran business communicators. This lunch focused on how other business communicators have dealt with government communications, mass communications versus individual communications, employee communications and more.

March 1: Creating a Winning Workplan for the Cactus Quill Awards. This forum provided our members with the opportunity to learn how to strategically prepare an accurate, complete work plan from a panel of award-winning experts.

February 1: Tucson IABC Chapter’s Silver Jubilee featuring International Vice Chair Todd Hattori, ABC. Todd's topic was “New Technology: What’s Right for Your Communication Mix." Download Todd's PowerPoint presentation (5.7 MB).

March 2, 2006: US Dept of Defense consultant Robert M. Berzok discussed ongoing public relations and community outreach regarding joint US-Ukraine Cooperative Threat Reduction Agency missile dismantlement programs in Pavlograd, Ukraine.

Feb 2, 2006: The Manager is the Medium™ — explore tools to deliver organizational messages with Bob Berry, APR, Fellow PRSA, who explored the manager's role in being the conduit for delivering key organizational messages.
